Lone Star Camp History
Lone Star Hoops was
originally known as "Lone Star Camps for Basketball Basics" and was
founded in 1988, by Jan Jernberg, with a single camp in the south central
region of the state. The name was officially changed to Lone Star
Hoops in l993 and the camp was incorporated in l998. In the past
twenty years, the program has organized, promoted and implemented over 200
full-day camps for boys and girls currently in the 2nd grade, up through
those currently in 8th grade. These LSH camps hosted
over 1800 campers last summer in fundamental and technical basketball
skill-work at thirteen different campsites throughout the state of Texas.
These future players had the opportunity to participate in a
state-of-the-art "big-time camp at a small-time price". Our
primary motive has always been to present the game as an energetic, upbeat,
cutting-edge experience, full of fun, incentives and competition--with
emphasis on the proper approach to the skills necessary to play the
"greatest game in the world". Our best source of publicity
has always been the word-of-mouth of satisfied campers and parents who have
witnessed first-hand the exciting and special dynamics of the Lone Star
Hoops "happening"! Of course, we have this great website to
better emphasize our desire to keep you informed regarding Lone Star
Hoops, L.L.C.!

Statement
of Purpose
The whole LSH
philosophy is built on the premise that "skilled" basketball
players are made, not born and the only way to become complete as a
player is to not just play the game but to "know" it!

To combine all
aspects of development, certain things must be stressed-- repetition,
muscle-memory work, building the positive self-esteem, teaching solid
technical skills, promoting both individual and team concepts, teaching
self-discipline and "putting the FUN in FUNdamentals!!!” We believe this can be done by offering
an elite experience without prohibitive expense. We employ over 50 people each summer,
including head coaches, assistant coaches, collegiates
and former players that all share the same level of enthusiasm, energy and
knowledge required to be a LSH instructor.
Our goal is simple: No camper
leaves the last day without a heart full of aspirations, a head full of
knowledge, a brain full of positive memories, hands full of momentos and a personality built on a foundation of
positive reinforcement. The Lone
Star Hoops way has a proven track record and our record of returning
campers speaks for itself. We are
about learning the game the RIGHT way and having fun while doing it… it's
that simple!
Common Camp Questions
WHAT IS A LONE STAR HOOPS CAMP?
A Lone Star Hoops Camp consists of technical and fundamental
basketball instruction, emphasizing a fast-paced, intense,
"circuit-training" effect for boys and girls.
It is perfectly suited for all shapes, sizes and skill levels from the
beginner to the aspiring "star of the court", and offers top
instruction along with high-quality perks found in much more expensive day
camps. This is not a
"baby-sitting" service!
Campers will compete everyday in a
nurturing atmosphere that offers instruction and play in small groups based
on experience, ability, age and size.
It is our sincere intention to provide something special for every
camper!
|
WHAT
DAYS? WHAT TIMES?
Camps will either run under the typical
Monday-Friday, 9 am-4 pm arrangement or will utlilize
our four-day, 8:30 am-4:30 pm format.
All camps include over 32 hours of direction…or approximately the
same amount of practice time a typical middle-schooler
will have in a month at school or a full season in
youth-league play. The camp
duration is a great incentive!
Lone Star Camps begin on June 9 and the last camp will conclude on
Friday,
July 31, 2008.

WHO FOR?
Camps are for all boys and girls as young as those currently in the 2nd grade through
those currently in 8th grade. Campers are grouped into
"conferences" of approximately 20, including a commissioner and
at least one assistant supervising each of these divisions. We limit involvement to a maximum of
10-to-1 camper-to-coach ratio.
Registration is limited and camps ALWAYS FILL UP AHEAD OF TIME.
WHAT IS OFFERED TO
CAMPERS?
All campers will receive a commemorative multi-colored
camp tee-shirt, a certificate of participation, personal evaluation, video instruction and will compete for over 200 awards
in everything from ball-handling to shooting, effort to improvement,
attitude to enthusiasm! There is
something for everyone and awards are given in each conference. Oh yes, and let's not forget…every camper
receives a full-size, red-white-and-blue indoor/outdoor official Lone Star
Hoops BASKETBALL!

WHAT
ABOUT LUNCH AND SNACKS? LSH will furnish a
concession stand where campers may purchase drinks and snacks throughout
the week at minimal costs. They
may also choose to purchase lunch or "brown bag" it. We are fortunate to have MR. GATTI'S pizza as one of our
corporate sponsors and pizza will be furnished throughout the
summer. For security purposes, we
have a "camp bank" supervised by an elementary school
teacher. Kids can make deposits
and withdrawals throughout the week at their convenience.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED
TO KNOW?
Campers should come dressed in shorts, tees and appropriate footwear, ready
for action upon arrival. Please
leave all hats and jewelry at home.
Cameras and Videos are welcome.
We have arrangements for early drop-off and late pick-up each day,
provided we are notified ahead of time.
There is always supervision by 8 am and as late as 5 pm daily.
There will be an awards presentation at approximately 4 pm on our four-day
events and approximately 1 pm for our five-day camps. With regard to the five-day format, we
officially end the instructional part of the camp with the presentation of
awards on Friday, but will still have activities until 4 pm.
HOW MUCH?
All Austin-area camps will be $150 per week, if paid by
June 1, 2008. All camps located outside
of Austin
will vary in cost, based on facilitation and insurance. Please check the updated 2008 schedule
for exact cost. Two or more siblings
enrolled in the same camp may deduct $10 per camper (Ex.: two brothers' total cost would deduct $20
to attend the same camp). The
sibling discount applies to all camps.
A minimum non-refundable $50 deposit is required upon receipt of registration. Early registration is discounted for
campers. All Austin
area camps are $150, provided they are paid by the "early
registration" date. After the deadline, the fee increases by
$20. Check specific camps for deadline dates. Camps tend to be completely
filled before June.
The camp registration
form is included in this website.
In an attempt to keep down registration costs, we do not accept
credit cards, but you may register by pulling up a copy of the form,
filling it out and enclosing a check or money order made payable to
"Lone Star Hoops, L.L.C".
Please make sure to carefully fill out every part of the form. The registration and the check must be
post-marked before the deadline to assure the discounted rate. Once the form and fee are received,
campers are guaranteed a space in the camp.
WE DO NOT SEND OUT
CONFIRMATIONS! You
may call to confirm or the cancelled
check will serve as your receipt.
